Stories told through Kuchipudi..
Mandooka Shabdam - Gajendra Moksham
The following video showcases my performance of "Alarulu Kuriyaga," a captivating composition by the renowned saint-poet Annamacharya. This exquisite piece is dedicated to Goddess Padmavathi, also known as Alavelumanga, one of Lord Venkateswara's beloved consorts. Annamacharya eloquently praises the divine beauty of Alavelumanga and her playful demeanor, particularly her enchanting participation in simple games. He draws attention to the graceful "Alaka" of her hair, where "Alaka" not only refers to anger but also suggests a gentle, playful agitation.
This video showcases my performance of Mandooka Sabdam, a renowned item in the Kuchipudi tradition. Mandooka Sabdam is famed for its depiction of the Gajendra Moksham episode, where a single dancer portrays multiple characters: King Indradyumna, Sage Agastya, Gajendra, the crocodile, Lord Vishnu, and Goddess Lakshmi.
Gajendra Moksham unfolds in the breathtaking Trikuta region, a celestial realm adorned with lush forests like Rtumat, belonging to Varuna, the ocean god. This idyllic forest, teeming with life, boasts fragrant flowers, juicy fruits, and lotus-filled lakes, providing a serene habitat for various creatures, including Gajendra, the majestic elephant leader.
Gajendra, in his previous life, was King Indradyumna, a devout ruler of the Pandya dynasty. However, due to a past transgression – failing to offer proper reception to Sage Agastya during a deep meditative state – Indradyumna was cursed to be reborn as an elephant.
One tranquil morning, while enjoying the serene beauty of Rtumat, Gajendra, along with his companions, approached a lake to quench their thirst. As he playfully sprinkled water on his companions, an unforeseen event occurred...
Alarulu Kuriyaga - Annamacharya Kirtan
In essence, Annamacharya describes the captivating movement of Alavelumanga's hair as she joyfully engages in games with her friends. The composition also highlights the unwavering adoration of her husband, Lord Venkateswara, who cherishes every simple act performed by his beloved consort. I invite you to watch the video to delve deeper into the beauty and essence of this enchanting composition.
Chikku's Heartbeat - A Forest's Cry for Coexistence and Conservation (My own composition)
"Chikku's Heartbeat: A Forest's Cry for Coexistence and Conservation" is a captivating narrative that vividly illustrates the fragile bond between humans and the forest. Told through the perspective of Chikku, a spirited forest creature (deer), the story underscores the urgent need for conservation and the profound impact of human actions on the natural world. It’s a stirring call to action, reminding us that true coexistence emerges when we thoughtfully safeguard the habitats we share with countless other beings. This heartfelt tale inspires to reflect on the responsibility of humans in protecting the planet's beauty and balance, fostering a sense of wonder, empathy, and connection with the earth and its diverse life forms.
